Eight moves from the home screen to the first feature

1. Decide which screen gets the library first

   Pick the screen where the movies will actually be watched before installing anything. Smarters runs as happily on a phone as on a television, but cover art, season lists and a two-hour film belong on the big screen, and search is something you will be doing with the TV remote. If the living-room set runs Android TV or has a Fire OS stick on it, start there. The phone or tablet can follow later in two minutes with the same details.

2. Install the right build

   Google Play carries it for Android TV, Google TV and Android phones. A Fire TV stick on Fire OS needs a sideload through Downloader, which the Firestick guide walks through; the 4K Select model is the exception, because Vega OS allows no sideloading, so that stick needs a different player. Apple hardware, whether iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, gets the free version from the App Store under the name Smarters Player Lite. For a Windows PC or a Mac, the installer sits on the developer’s site. Samsung and LG listings have come and gone by model year, so check the TV store and use Smart IPTV where Smarters is missing.

3. Take the Xtream Codes route

   After the terms screen the app offers more than one way to add an account. Select the one labeled Login with Xtream Codes API. That is what fills the Movies and Series tiles with cover art and season lists, along with the program guide; adding the account as a playlist URL tends to produce a plain list of live channels and empty on-demand tiles.

4. Type the three details

   The first field is a profile name and only a label, so the room name works well if several screens share the plan. Then the username and the password, both case sensitive, and the server URL with http:// in front and the port number after the colon at the end. Type them by hand instead of pasting from WhatsApp, where an invisible space often rides along. Press Add User.

5. Let the catalog finish indexing

   The first launch downloads three things: the live channel list, the program guide and the catalog of 120,000+ movies and series. The Movies tile is usually the last to fill because the catalog is the largest part. Leave the app on its loading screen until the home screen appears with every tile active; restarting halfway only makes it begin again.

6. Shorten the path to tonight’s film

   Inside Movies, open any category and press the search icon to find a title by name instead of scrolling. Use the favorite option on a title’s page, or hold OK on it, depending on the version, to build a short list for the next movie night. If your version shows a Continue Watching or Recently Watched row, a half-finished film waits there. Those resume points are stored by the app on that device, not in the cloud, so the tablet does not know where the television stopped.

7. Lock the categories children should not open

   Look in Settings for Parental Control, if your version offers it. Set a PIN, then lock the adult categories in Live TV, Movies and Series. Doing it now means a younger viewer can be handed the remote on a Saturday afternoon without anyone hovering over the category list.

8. Start a movie, an episode and a channel

   Open Movies, start any title and skip forward to confirm seeking works. Open Series, choose a show, a season and its second episode, and check the next episode is listed after it. Back on the home screen, open Live TV and tune a news or sports channel. When all three play, the setup is finished. If one device stutters while the others play smoothly, switch that device to the hardware decoder in the player settings.

The Movies tile opens onto nothing

The account almost certainly went in through the playlist route. Return to the list of users and create a fresh one, choosing Login with Xtream Codes API this time and typing the same three details; then remove the old entry. The on-demand tiles fill after the first download completes.

Search returns nothing for a title you can see

In most versions search works inside the section you have open, so a movie search started from Live TV comes back empty. Go into Movies first, then search. Use one distinctive word from the title rather than the full name; some builds match only the beginning of a title.

A 4K movie plays sound over a black picture

The device is struggling to decode the video. Open the player settings, switch between the hardware and software decoder, then reopen the title. Some older sticks and phones cannot decode 4K at all; on those, choose an HD copy of the title where the category lists one, or save that film for the 4K-capable screen.

The tablet starts the series from the beginning

That is expected rather than a fault. Smarters stores watch history on each device separately, so a resume point set on the television does not travel to the tablet. Open the episode list on the second screen, pick the episode you reached and skip to the minute if you remember it.

The server URL is rejected straight away

Smarters is strict about the address: http:// at the start, a colon and the port at the end, nothing after the port. A slash added by the keyboard or a space left by copying is enough to fail. Clear the field and type it again slowly; if the TV keyboard is awkward, add the account on a phone first to prove the details are right.
