Nartiel8k – Your screening room at home: 120,000+ movies and series, plus live TV

IPTV glossary: plain definitions for the login, the guide and the library

Nartiel8k cover for "IPTV glossary: plain definitions for the login, the guide and the library": a television in a darkened room, shown in black and yellow

This IPTV glossary defines, in plain English, the words you meet when you set up a player, browse a movie library and read the program guide, from APK to Xtream Codes. Each entry says what the term means and where you will see it on the screen. Where a definition depends on the service, Nartiel8k is used as the example, since its setup and library are what we know in detail.

The entries run alphabetically, in five blocks. If you only read five of them before your first evening, make it these.

Start with In one line
Xtream Codes login Server URL, username and password: the key to your subscription
Player app The software on your TV that plays the subscription; it is empty until you sign in
VOD The on-demand shelf of movies and series
EPG The program guide for the live channels
Connection One screen playing at a time; your plan sets how many

From 8K to codec

8K

A picture of 7680 by 4320 pixels, four times the detail of 4K. Live 8K television does not exist in any practical sense, so a service offering it should raise an eyebrow. The “8k” in a brand name is just a name; the page explaining what the 8k in Nartiel8k really means sets out what is carried instead: 4K where the source is 4K, plus FHD and HD.

APK

The installation file for an Android app, used on Android TV boxes and Fire OS devices when an app is installed from outside the official store. Download players only from their developer’s own page, and never install an APK that claims to be a provider’s own app.

Audio track

One of several soundtracks a film or channel can carry, usually a different language or a different mix. Where a title includes more than one, most players offer a track menu during playback.

Bitrate

The amount of data a stream uses per second, given in Mbps. Two streams with the same resolution can look quite different if one has a much higher bitrate, especially in dark film scenes and fast action.

Buffering

The pause, often with a spinning circle, while a player waits for more video to arrive. Weak Wi-Fi in the TV room is the usual suspect; if every channel and film buffers at once, look at the connection before the stream.

Catch-up

Programs that have already aired, kept in an archive and replayed from the program guide. It exists only on channels that carry it, and how far back it reaches differs from channel to channel. Players that support it usually mark those channels with a small icon.

Category

A folder that groups content. Live channels sit in categories by country and type; the movie and series library is divided into categories by genre, language and collection. Categories are what make a very large list browsable with a remote.

Codec

The method used to compress video. H.264 plays on almost anything. HEVC, also called H.265, gives similar quality at a lower bitrate and is common on 4K titles; a device without hardware HEVC support may stutter or show a black picture on them.

From collection to frame rate

Collection

A library category that gathers related films in one place, such as the installments of a long-running franchise or a seasonal selection. Handy on movie night when the house wants something in the same vein as last week’s film.

Connection

One stream playing at a time, sometimes called a screen. The login can live on every device you own, and the plan’s connection count decides how many may stream in the same minute. Plans commonly come with one, two, three or five.

Decoder

The stage of playback that unpacks compressed video into frames. A player can hand that job to the device’s built-in video hardware (usually smoother) or run it on the main processor (slower, but more tolerant of unusual formats). Flipping that setting is a standard fix when one title refuses to play properly.

Downloader

A free app used on Fire OS devices to fetch and install a player from a web address. It needs installs from unknown apps allowed in Developer Options, which are hidden until you press select seven times on the device name under My Fire TV > About. On the 4K Select model, which is built on Vega OS, sideloading is not possible; the Nartiel8k Firestick walkthrough covers the models that can.

EPG

Electronic program guide: a timetable for the live channels, laid out as a grid with the current program, the next one and the rest of the week. It is how you plan a live evening, and it is also where catch-up programs are chosen.

EPG URL

A separate web address that supplies guide data to players which do not fetch it automatically, usually in the XMLTV format. On services of this kind it typically ends in xmltv.php. Xtream Codes logins usually bring the guide with them.

Episode list

The numbered list of episodes inside one season of a series, often with a title and a short description for each. From here you start an episode, and in many players continue straight on to the next.

Expiry date

The last day of the paid term. Most players display it under account information or settings. When it passes, everything stops on every device at once, which can look like an outage. On a prepaid plan that does not renew, it is the first thing to check.

Favorites

A personal shortlist of channels, films or series, marked in the player and kept on that device. In TiviMate, favorites are a Premium feature; in other players they are often free.

Frame rate

The number of pictures shown per second. Films are traditionally made at 24, regular television at 25 or 30, and sport is often broadcast at 50 or 60. A “match frame rate” option in the device’s display settings can smooth out judder on films.

From HDR to MAG box

HDR

High dynamic range: brighter highlights, deeper shadows and richer color than standard video. It appears only when the title is mastered in HDR, the player passes it through and the television supports it, so it varies from film to film.

Latency

How far a live stream runs behind the real broadcast, typically several seconds. It is why a neighbor’s cheer can arrive before the goal reaches your screen. On-demand titles are unaffected, since they have no live moment to fall behind.

Line

Trade slang for a single subscription account. Each line carries its own end date and its own cap on simultaneous screens; sellers talk about opening a line for a new customer and extending it at renewal.

Live TV

Scheduled channels that play as they are broadcast, from news and sport to music and movie channels. In most players it is a separate section from Movies and Series, with the program guide attached.

M3U link

A single web address that loads a subscription as a playlist, typically a get.php link with the username and password written into it. Players such as VLC accept it when they do not support Xtream Codes. Treat it like a password: anyone holding it holds the account. The M3U playlist guide shows where to paste it.

MAC address

A device’s network fingerprint, written as six two-character pairs separated by colons. On a MAG box it begins 00:1A:79. Some apps and boxes are linked to a subscription by their MAC address instead of a username and password, so a replacement device needs to be linked again.

MAG box

A set-top box designed for live IPTV. Instead of a login form, it uses a portal URL entered in its settings, and the provider ties the subscription to the box’s MAC address.

From metadata to resume point

Metadata

The information that dresses a library title: poster, synopsis, year, running time, genre and sometimes a rating. It comes from the provider’s catalog, and the more complete it is, the easier it is to pick tonight’s feature without opening each title in turn.

Multi-view

Showing two or more live channels on one screen at the same time, handy on a busy sports afternoon. In TiviMate it is a Premium feature. Each stream on screen may count as a separate connection.

OTT

Over the top. The label for video that rides the ordinary public internet into an app, instead of travelling on a network the TV operator owns. Streaming apps are OTT, and in practice so is the way most IPTV subscriptions reach a home.

Panel

The back-office website where a provider or reseller opens accounts, chooses how many screens each may use and moves end dates. Viewers never log in to it, and its speed is why a new account can be live within minutes.

Parental PIN

A code that locks chosen categories or channels, offered by some players. If family movie night includes children, set it up on the shared TV before the first evening; it applies only inside the player where you set it.

Player app

The software that plays a subscription, such as IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate, Smart IPTV or iPlayTV. A player contains nothing until a login is entered. IPTV Smarters Pro shows separate Live TV, Movies and Series sections after an Xtream Codes login; on Apple devices the free version is Smarters Player Lite.

Portal URL

The web address a MAG-style box connects to instead of showing a login form. It goes into the portal field of the box’s settings once; after that, the box’s registered MAC address does the identifying.

Recording

Saving a live program to storage to watch later. It depends entirely on the player: TiviMate Premium can record, many other players cannot. Catch-up covers some of the same ground without any storage of your own.

Reseller

Someone who sells a provider’s service to their own customers, buying subscription time from the provider’s panel in the form of credits. The streams are only as good as the source behind the reseller.

Resolution tags

The labels in channel and title names that give picture size: SD, HD (720p), FHD (1080p) and 4K or UHD (2160p). When the same channel appears under several tags, those are separate versions; pick the highest your screen and connection carry well.

Resume point

The spot where you stopped a film or episode, remembered by players that offer a “continue watching” feature. It is stored inside that player on that device, not in a cloud account, so switching from the TV to a tablet means finding your place by hand.

From season to VOD

Season

The level between a series and its episodes. Opening a series in the library shows its seasons, and opening a season shows its episode list, which is how a long series stays easy to navigate over several nights.

Search

The quickest way through a large library. Typing a few letters of a title or a name with the remote usually beats scrolling a category of thousands. Some players search movies, series and channels separately.

Server URL

The first of the three login fields, sometimes called the host. It normally starts with http:// and can finish with a colon and a port number such as :8080; dropping either part is a classic reason for a refused login.

Sideloading

Putting an app on a device from a downloaded file instead of its official store. It is possible on Fire OS and Android TV, not on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (Vega OS) and not on Roku.

Subtitles

Text versions of the dialogue, offered per title when the source carries them and switched on from the player’s subtitle menu during playback.

Timeshift

Going back a few minutes in a live channel, or holding it on pause, while the program is still on air, where the player or the channel supports it. It is related to catch-up but works within the program on air rather than reaching back days.

Trial

A short test account, usually a day long, that lets you check the service on your own television before paying. The Nartiel8k free trial lasts 24 hours and includes the live channels and the full library.

VOD

Video on demand. The films and series that begin when you press play, as opposed to live channels that keep to a timetable. In most players it appears as separate Movies and Series sections. The Nartiel8k on-demand library holds 120,000+ titles behind the same login as its 25,000+ channels.

Xtream Codes

The name began as a piece of server software; today it simply means the three-part login of server URL, username and password. A player that understands it fills its live, movie, series and guide sections in a single pass, which makes it the easiest route on most devices. A Nartiel8k subscription is issued in this format, alongside an M3U link.

The vocabulary at work on a first evening

Put together, the terms describe a short and ordinary sequence. You receive an Xtream Codes login; you sideload or download a player app; you type in the server URL, username and password; the player fills its Live TV, Movies and Series sections and loads the EPG. You open VOD, pick a category, use search for the title somebody mentioned, mark a few favorites, and press play on a film, which the player will remember at its resume point if it offers one. Everything else in this glossary is there for the evenings when something looks different from that.

Quick answers on this topic

What is the difference between VOD and catch-up?

On demand means a permanent shelf of films and series that you can start at any time, organized into categories and, for series, into seasons and episodes. Catch-up replays recent broadcasts from specific live channels, for a limited period that varies by channel. One is a shelf; the other is a short memory of the broadcast schedule.

Should I use the Xtream Codes login or the M3U link?

Pick Xtream Codes if the player offers it. Three short fields are easier to type with a remote than one long address, and the player then pulls in the live channels, the Movies and Series sections and the program guide together. The M3U link is the fallback for apps that read playlists only; add the separate guide address if such an app asks for it.

What does EPG stand for in IPTV?

EPG stands for electronic program guide. It is the grid in your player that shows what is on each live channel now, what comes next and what airs later. Players build it from schedule data supplied with the subscription, either automatically with an Xtream Codes login or from a separate guide address when you use an M3U link.

Why does my player remember where I stopped on the TV but not on my tablet?

Because resume points are stored inside each player on each device, not in an online account. The television's player knows where you paused, and the tablet's player has its own separate memory. To carry on a film or a series on another screen, open the same title there and skip forward to your place.

What does 4K, FHD or HD mean next to a channel name?

Those are resolution tags. HD is 720p, FHD is 1080p and 4K, also written UHD, is 2160p. When a channel appears more than once with different tags, those are alternative copies of the same channel. Choose the highest one that your television, your streaming device and your connection handle without stuttering.

Does Nartiel8k use Xtream Codes or M3U?

Both. A Nartiel8k subscription is issued as an Xtream Codes login, meaning a server URL, a username and a password, together with an M3U link for players that only accept playlists. The details arrive in the WhatsApp chat where you ordered, and there is no separate Nartiel8k app to install.

Tonight’s feature is one message away

Pick a plan and send it in WhatsApp; the login comes back in that chat in under 15 minutes. It opens 120,000+ movies and series and 25,000+ live channels, with your money back if you ask within 7 days.
